Run Flat Tyres

Strengthened tyres than can temporarily keep
going in the event of a puncture

Do you need Run Flat tyres?

At Jefferies Tyres, we stock a wide range of tyre types – including run flat versions. To learn more about these models and how they work, keep reading.

What are Run Flat Tyres?

Run flat tyres have been specially designed to continue working should you suffer a puncture or a significant loss of air pressure.

The structure of these models means you’re able to drive your car to safety, whether you head home, go to a nearby garage or find a suitable place to wait for breakdown assistance.

Many manufacturers now design their vehicles with run flats and as a result do not provide a spare wheel in the boot.

How do they work?

Compared to conventional style tyres, these models feature much thicker, more supportive reinforced sidewalls.

The construction of these tyres means that they are able to maintain their strength and shape even if the air pressure within the tyre has reduced. So, if you have suffered a puncture while you’re out and about on the roads, you will still be able to drive on them for a short period of time before swapping them for new models.

In order for them to work effectively, run flats must be used in conjunction with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). This technology advises the driver if one of their tyres suddenly drops in pressure by displaying a message on their dashboard.

While they are different to conventional tyres, you can expect run flats to wear at the same rate. This means you should look after your run flats as you would a ‘regular’ set of tyres. For example, you should check the tread depth regularly to ensure it is above the minimum legal limit of 1.6mm, and you should also get into the habit of measuring the air pressure.

Carrying out simple checks like this can help you stay safe and prolong the life of your tyres.

My car has conventional tyres, should I switch?

Although it might be a tempting thought, if your car has been designed with conventional style tyres at the time of manufacturing, switching to run flat versions is not recommended.

This is mainly because your car may not be fitted with a TPMS. Without a TPMS, you may not be aware of a problem with your tyres and continue to drive your vehicle as normal.

This will put your wellbeing and safety at risk while you’re behind the wheel. When a loss of pressure is detected by a vehicle fitted with TPMS, a dashboard light will illuminate like the one shown below.

You should also avoid putting conventional tyres on your vehicle if it is set up for run flats. The majority of car manufacturers that fit run flat tyres do not provide a spare wheel or the tools to replace it.

So, if you were to switch to conventional style tyres, you would not have the equipment you need to change your tyre yourself if you suffer a puncture or blow out.

If you’re not sure whether your car has run flats or not, you should speak to one of our professional tyre specialists.
